The NZPPA Certificate in Payroll Practice is an entry-level qualification for people processing or managing payroll, or intending to process and manage payroll.
In this first module you will cover the core concepts of payroll process and practice, the role and responsibilities of a payroll practitioner and payroll reporting.

In this second module the focus is on legislation that impacts on the work and activities conducted in payroll.
It is very important that payroll practitioners have a clear understanding of how to apply legislation to their payroll to ensure compliance. This is an ongoing activity for payroll as legislation is changing on a frequent basis.
In this module the fundamentals of human resources will be investigated.
It does not matter where payroll sits within an organisation (under HR or Finance) there will always be elements of HR coming through into the work payroll practitioners do so having an understanding of what HR is and some of the activities it covers is essential.

In this module two areas will be outlined because of their importance to payroll being: accounting principles and using a computerised payroll application.
As you would have discussed in the previous modules payroll has a lot of employment law requirements that must be met but at the core of any payroll is the accounting principles that links it to the rest of the business. In this module an overview of accounting principles will be covered.
Also because of the record keeping requirements set by legislation and the cost and risk involved in manually trying to process an employees pay the use of a computerised payroll application is now an essential tool for a payroll practitioner. This is not data entry as a payroll practitioner needs to fully understand all the calculations and activities their payroll system does in the production of a pay and be able to troubleshoot when problems arise.
